From API Key to Active Bot — Everything in One Place
You’ve created your BitcoinEra account. You’ve chosen your bot. You’ve set up your API key on your exchange. Now it’s time to bring everything together and actually get your bot running.
This guide covers the final connection step — linking your API key to your chosen bot inside the BitcoinEra dashboard — and walks you through everything that happens from that moment until your bot places its first trade.
This guide works for all three supported exchanges: Binance, Bybit, and OKX.
Before You Start — Quick Checklist
Before connecting anything, make sure you have all of the following ready:
- ✅ A verified BitcoinEra account
- ✅ A bot selected from the catalog
- ✅ A verified exchange account (Binance, Bybit, or OKX)
- ✅ An API key created on your exchange with correct permissions
- ✅ Your API Key and Secret Key saved and accessible
- ✅ Your Passphrase saved (OKX users only)
- ✅ Sufficient funds on your exchange to run the bot
💡 Not sure how much capital you need? Each bot in the catalog shows a recommended minimum capital in its description. As a general rule — never allocate more than you’re comfortable losing, especially when running a bot for the first time.
What Happens When You Connect a Bot
Let’s quickly explain what’s happening behind the scenes when you connect a bot — so you’re not clicking buttons blindly.
When you paste your API key into BitcoinEra and click Connect:
- BitcoinEra sends a test request to your exchange using your API credentials
- The exchange confirms that the credentials are valid and the permissions are correct
- BitcoinEra reads your available balance to verify the connection is live
- The bot is now authorized to place trades on your behalf
- The bot begins monitoring the market according to its strategy
- When its conditions are met — it places its first trade automatically
The entire process from clicking Connect to the bot being live takes less than a minute in most cases.
Step-by-Step: Connecting Your Bot
Step 1 — Log In to Your BitcoinEra Dashboard
Go to bitcoinera.biz and log in with your email and password. Complete 2FA verification if you have it enabled — which we strongly recommend.
You’ll land on your personal dashboard. If this is your first time here, it will be empty — no bots connected yet, no statistics showing. That’s about to change.
Step 2 — Navigate to Your Chosen Bot
From the dashboard, you have two ways to find your bot:
Option A — From the Catalog Click “Catalog” in the main navigation. Find the bot you’ve chosen, and click “View Bot” to open its full detail page.
Option B — From Your Dashboard If you previously saved or bookmarked a bot, it may appear in your dashboard under “My Bots” or “Saved Bots”. Click on it to open it.
On the bot’s detail page you’ll see its full description, performance statistics, author information, and a prominent “Connect” or “Start Trading” button.
Step 3 — Click “Connect Exchange”
On the bot detail page, click the “Connect Exchange” or “Add API Key” button.
A connection panel or modal window will appear. This is where you’ll enter your API credentials.
Step 4 — Select Your Exchange
From the dropdown menu, select the exchange where you created your API key:
- Binance
- Bybit
- OKX
Make sure you select the correct exchange — API keys are exchange-specific. A Binance API key will not work on Bybit, and vice versa.
Step 5 — Enter Your API Credentials
Depending on which exchange you selected, you’ll see either two or three input fields:
For Binance and Bybit:
- API Key
- Secret Key
For OKX:
- API Key
- Secret Key
- Passphrase
Open your password manager where you saved these credentials and copy-paste each one carefully into the corresponding field.
Important tips when entering credentials:
- Always copy-paste — never type manually. One wrong character will cause the connection to fail.
- Make sure there are no spaces before or after the pasted values
- Double-check you’re pasting the API Key into the API Key field and the Secret Key into the Secret Key field — it’s an easy mix-up to make
- OKX users: make sure your Passphrase matches exactly what you set when creating the key — it is case-sensitive
Step 6 — Configure Bot Settings
Before finalizing the connection, BitcoinEra will ask you to configure a few basic settings for how the bot will operate on your account. These typically include:
Trading Pair Most Bitcoin bots trade the BTC/USDT pair by default. Some bots support additional pairs — check the bot description to see what’s available.
Allocated Capital How much of your exchange balance you want this bot to use. This is not a transfer — the funds stay in your exchange account. You’re simply telling the bot how much it’s allowed to work with.
💡 For your first bot, we recommend starting with a small allocation — $100 to $300 is a sensible starting point. You can always increase it later once you’re comfortable with how the bot behaves.
Risk Level (if applicable) Some bots allow you to choose between conservative, balanced, or aggressive settings. If you’re a beginner, always start with the most conservative option available.
Stop Loss (if applicable) Some bots let you set a maximum loss threshold — if the bot loses more than this percentage of your allocated capital, it stops automatically. This is a useful safety net for beginners.
Step 7 — Review and Confirm
Before clicking the final confirmation button, take a moment to review everything:
- ✅ Correct exchange selected
- ✅ API credentials entered correctly
- ✅ Trading pair is correct
- ✅ Allocated capital is an amount you’re comfortable with
- ✅ Risk settings match your risk tolerance
- ✅ Stop loss is configured if available
Once you’re satisfied everything looks right — click “Connect” or “Confirm”.
Step 8 — Connection Verification
BitcoinEra will now attempt to verify your connection. This takes a few seconds.
During this process:
- BitcoinEra sends a test request to your exchange
- Your exchange validates the API credentials
- BitcoinEra confirms the required permissions are in place
- Your available balance is read and displayed
If the connection is successful: You’ll see a green confirmation message — something like “Bot connected successfully” or “Exchange connected”. Your balance will appear and the bot status will show as Active.
If the connection fails: You’ll see an error message. Don’t panic — this is almost always a simple credentials issue. See the troubleshooting section below.
Step 9 — Your Bot Is Now Live
Congratulations — your bot is connected and running.
From this moment, the bot is actively monitoring the market according to its strategy. When it identifies a trading opportunity that matches its programmed conditions, it will place a trade automatically — without any action required from you.
Here’s what you’ll see in your dashboard going forward:
Bot Status — Active / Paused / Stopped Current Positions — any open trades the bot currently holds Trade History — a log of every trade the bot has executed Performance Summary — total return, win rate, drawdown since activation Balance — your current exchange balance as updated in real time
What to Do in the First 24 Hours
The first day after connecting a bot is the most important time to pay attention. Here’s what we recommend:
Check Back After a Few Hours
Visit your dashboard a few hours after connecting. Look at the trade history — has the bot made any trades? If the market conditions don’t match the bot’s strategy yet, it might not trade immediately. This is completely normal.
Don’t Panic at Small Fluctuations
Your balance will go up and down as the bot opens and closes positions. A small negative return on day one is not a reason to stop the bot. Bots need time to demonstrate their strategy — typically at least 2–4 weeks to get a meaningful picture of performance.
Set Up Notifications
Go to your BitcoinEra account settings and enable email or push notifications for important events — like when the bot opens a large position or triggers a stop loss. This keeps you informed without requiring you to check the dashboard constantly.
Don’t Adjust Settings Constantly
One of the biggest mistakes new bot users make is constantly tweaking settings based on short-term results. Set your parameters, give the bot time to operate, and resist the urge to change things every day.
Troubleshooting Connection Issues
“Invalid API Key” or “Authentication Error”
This is the most common error and almost always means one of two things:
- You copied the credentials incorrectly — go back and re-paste them carefully
- You’re using the wrong key for the wrong exchange — a Bybit key won’t work on a Binance connection
Fix: Delete the credentials from BitcoinEra, go back to your exchange API Management page, copy the credentials fresh, and re-enter them.
“Insufficient Permissions”
The API key doesn’t have the right permissions enabled.
Fix: Go to your exchange API Management page, find the key, edit its permissions to include Spot Trading (and Read), save, and try connecting again.
“Connection Timed Out”
A temporary network issue between BitcoinEra and your exchange.
Fix: Wait a few minutes and try again. If the issue persists, check if your exchange is experiencing any downtime — most exchanges have a status page you can check.
“Insufficient Balance”
The amount of capital you’ve allocated to the bot is more than what’s currently available in your exchange account.
Fix: Either deposit more funds to your exchange account, or reduce the allocated capital in the bot settings to match what you have available.
“IP Address Not Authorized”
You’ve set up IP restrictions on your API key but the BitcoinEra server IP isn’t on the approved list.
Fix: Go to your exchange API Management, edit the key, and add the BitcoinEra server IP address to the approved list. Contact BitcoinEra support to get the correct IP address if needed.
How to Pause or Stop Your Bot
If you ever need to pause or stop your bot — for any reason — here’s how:
To Pause: Go to your dashboard, find the bot, and click “Pause”. The bot will stop opening new trades but will keep any existing positions open until they close naturally.
To Stop: Click “Stop”. The bot will stop all activity. Depending on the bot’s settings, it may close open positions immediately or leave them to close at the next opportunity.
To Disconnect: Click “Disconnect Exchange”. This removes the API key connection entirely. The bot can no longer access your exchange account. Your funds are completely unaffected.
💡 After disconnecting, remember to also delete the API key from your exchange’s API Management page. This is the cleanest way to fully sever the connection.
